MGMI — 120 Years of Service to the Mineral Industry

India Mining Week is organised by the Mining, Geological & Metallurgical Institute of India (MGMI), which has completed an extraordinary journey of 120 years of professional service to India's mineral and energy industries. Recognised as the oldest professional institute of its kind in Asia, MGMI has, since its inception, remained committed to advancing the knowledge, practice and application of geology, mining and metallurgy and to supporting the sustainable development of the country's mineral resources.

Over the decades, MGMI has evolved into a multidisciplinary professional forum bringing together mining and geological professionals, metallurgists, technocrats, planners and policymakers, industry leaders, academicians, researchers and students. Its membership today represents a broad spectrum of the mineral-based industries and the wider minerals and energy ecosystem.

MGMI has played an important role in shaping professional discourse on the Indian mineral sector. Even before Independence, the Government of India sought the Institute's views on a wide range of matters, from safety measures in underground mines to taxation issues affecting small-scale mining. This tradition of professional engagement and providing informed perspectives on matters concerning the mineral industry continued in the post-Independence era.

Over its 120-year journey, MGMI has remained a vibrant platform for knowledge exchange, professional development and industry collaboration through technical lectures, seminars, conferences, workshops, study tours and publications, including its Transactions and News Journal. Its flagship Asian Mining Congress (AMC) and International Mining Exhibition (IME) have further established MGMI as an important international platform for the mining and mineral community, bringing together industry, government, academia, technology providers and policymakers.
